For the convenience of tourists, Sri Lanka has three international airports:

  • international airport Colombo (Bandaranaike)

Bandaranaike International Airport

Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is Sri Lanka’s largest airport and serves as the main gateway to the country. Located in the city of Katunayake, BIA is only 35 kilometers north of the capital Colombo. The airport has a modern infrastructure and offers a wide range of services, including duty-free shopping, currency exchange and restaurants.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) is Sri Lanka’s second international airport, built in 2013 in the southern district of Hambantota. Although it was built to accommodate a large number of tourists, it is still underutilized and is often referred to as one of the world’s empty airports. However, for tourists wanting to explore the southern regions of Sri Lanka, MRIA is an ideal airport because it is closer to popular tourist destinations such as Hikkaduwa, Galle and Tangalle.

Jaffna International Airport

Jaffna International Airport opened in 2019 in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka and has since become a popular gateway for tourists visiting the region. Jaffna is famous for its rich culture and history, and the airport offers a convenient way to explore the city and surrounding area. The airport offers regular flights from Colombo, making it an accessible destination for tourists.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, getting to know Sri Lanka’s airports is a must.
