Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Sigiriya (or Lion Mountain) is probably the most recognizable landmark of Sri Lanka, a true calling card of the island, which is a must-see for all travelers who come here. Since 1982 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In essence, Sigiriya is a small town and a 170-meter-high rock at its center, This unusual mountain is located in the central district of Sri Lanka and is part of the country’s cultural triangle.

The first thing to note about Sigiriya is its incredible history. This ancient rock fortress was built by King Kasiyapa in the 5th century and is still a testament to his ingenuity and foresight. As you explore the fortress, you will be amazed by the intricate frescoes, the imposing Lion’s Gate and the vast gardens that surround it.

Earlier in the 5th century AD, an ancient city was formed around this rock, on top of which was a fortress inhabited by King Casapa I, who located here the capital of the country. However, it was here for a short time and soon the place lost its importance and was abandoned until the beginning of the 20th century.

Admission fee: $30. It includes a visit to the adjoining grounds, a climb up the cliff, and a walk through the museum. First they suggest climbing to the top of the mountain through the lion’s paws and then strolling through the park around, seeing the preserved murals, pools, Cobra Rock and more.

But Sigiriya is not just a historical site, it is also a place of unparalleled natural beauty. From the top of the fortress you have a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside with its lush green forests and sparkling waterfalls. And as you stroll through the gardens, you’ll be surrounded by exotic flowers, rare trees and even species of native wildlife.

Visiting hours: daily, 08:30 – 17:30

To get to the top of the mountain, you have to climb 750 stairs. The steps are comfortable and there are handrails. Take drinking water with you, it is not sold here.

In general, the tour here takes about 3 hours. The easiest way to get here is to buy a group tour here at any tourist shop in one of the resorts of Sri Lanka.

Of course, no tour of Sigiriya would be complete without visiting some of the nearby sights. The nearby Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the most impressive Buddhist sites in the world, with its intricate carvings, colorful murals and serene atmosphere. And just a short walk away is Minneria National Park, home to a stunning array of wildlife, including elephants, leopards and hundreds of bird species.
